Gastrointestinal diseases refer to diseases involving the gastrointestinal tract, which includes  esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and rectum, and the other accessory organs of digestion, the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Liver serves many important functions in the body. It helps in food digestion, store energy and remove poisons. If liver becomes diseased or injured, the loss of those functions can cause significant damage to the body. There are different forms of liver disease that affect men, women and children. These diseases include cirrhosis, alcohol abuse, hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E.

Digestive system helps  the body break down and absorb food. It contains a layer of smooth muscle that moves food along the tract. The digestive system is complex  system that can be disrupted by disease, diet and emotional stress. While a few can be remedied with medicine and lifestyle changes, others require surgery. Health physicians use cutting edge technology, such as gastrointestinal ultrasound, to diagnose and treat digestive conditions.

The immune reaction of the gastrointestinal tract to the external stimulus or the failure to respond is an important aspect of the function of gastrointestinal tract system. The area of gastrointestinal disorders is currently having development in terms of research. Scientific progress in the area of gut immune system and the immune abnormalities includes the latest developments in organ transplantation of the liver and gut, HIV infection of the gut, and the recently discovered disease H. pylori gastritis.

Digestion of food is the crucial function of the gastrointestinal tract. Many gastrointestinal diseases have nutritional effects. The role will be on the liver in regulating the availability of carbohydrates, lipids and essential substrates to peripheral tissues. The clinical features and specific effects of malnutrition on the gastrointestinal tract and liver will be discussed along with diet therapy in gastrointestinal disease.

Gastrointestinal tract imaging uses a form of real-time x-ray called fluoroscopy and a barium-based contrast material to produce images of the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine and other parts of digestive system.  It is safe, noninvasive and is used to help diagnose pain, acid reflux, blood in the stool and other symptoms.

The causing factor of  Inflamatory bowel disease remains unknown. Earlier diet and stress were suspected, but now doctors know that these factors may aggravate but don't cause IBD. One possible cause is an immune system malfunction. As the immune system tries to fight off an invading virus or bacterium, an abnormal immune response causes the immune system to attack the cells in the digestive tract, too. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) represents an association of intestinal disorders that engender prolonged inflammation of the digestive tract. These are of two types: Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease usually involve severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue and weight loss.

The Disarray of  lower gastrointestinal tract can be throbbing, abashing and even life-threatening. The root cause can be immensely hard to spot. The symptomps being very similar to other disease there lies a high chance of  misdiagnosis and mistreatment. Also study shows that patient treated by colon and rectal surgeons are are more prone to colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer annually hits about 140,000 people and causes 60,000 deaths, but is potentially curable if detected in its early stages. More than 90 percent of patients are over 40, at which point the risk of contracting the disease doubles every ten years.

There are a variety of motility disorders that can affect the GI tract from the very top (esophagus) to the very bottom (colon and rectum). Each part of the GI tract – esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine – has a unique function to perform in digestion, and each has a distinct type of motility and sensation. When motility or sensations are not appropriate for performing this function, symptoms occur.Gastrointestinal (GI) motility is defined by the movements of the digestive system, and the transit of the contents within it. When nerves or muscles in any portion of the digestive tract do not function with their normal strength and coordination, a person develops symptoms related to motility problems.
